THE PRACTICE OF LOVE

BREAK OLD PATTERNS, REBUILD TRUST, AND CREATE A CONNECTION THAT LASTS

A master class in relationship repair and connection.

At its core, this book delivers an inconvenient truth. Our relationships have to be a daily practice if we want them to thrive. We should treat them like we treat anything that we want to succeed, by giving them time and attention. For far too long it has been assumed that we should innately understand how to love one another. Relationships have fallen into the category of things we should know how to do. But we are not born knowing how to make a relationship work, any more than we are born knowing how to file taxes or buy insurance, and there are no classes in high school or college that teach us how to do this. The Practice of Love is that class.

In the stories Torrent shares about his clients, he isn’t afraid to confront them and call them out. He also walks the walk by taking himself to task concerning his own relationships. Ultimately, Torrent offers concrete steps to achieving these goals and urges his patients to be mindful of their thoughts and actions and to practice kindness and love consistently. Readers willing to challenge themselves and hoping to make a difference in their relationships will be inspired by Torrent’s frank talk.

I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of this book. As a happily married person for over twenty-five years, I know that relationships can be challenging and as a licensed counselor for over thirty years, I can attest to the fact that more and more couples are seeking therapy. The Practice of Love is a book that can be used effectively by both professionals in their offices and by couples in their own homes. It provides truly innovative techniques and tools to help partners understand each other at a new level, perhaps for the first time, and to create lasting, fulfilling relationships. Each chapter contains tried and true exercises, created using a combination of western psychology, mindfulness and Buddhist psychology, that anyone can do. They not only enrich your life as a couple but also as an individual. I am pleased to wholeheartedly recommend The Practice of Love.

MUST READ for everyone (not just couples!)

I went into this book thinking that it was going to help improve my relationship, but it did way more for me than that. It's not just a guide for couples, it's a guide for individuals who are looking to better their relationship with themselves too.
This book shows Lair Torrent's vulnerability as he learns from his experiences in life, those around him, and even the clients that he sees. It provides insight into the ways he's helped people through challenges and the challenges he has faced. It is a guidebook to love at its core that isn't just applied to the relationship you're in with a significant other, it can be applied to yourself, to your friendships, and even to your professional work environment.
This book teaches the importance of love, understanding, and kindness, while also reinforcing the fact that we have to also be both accountable and responsible for our actions. This book changed the way I see the world, and it is on my gift list for all my friends this year from birthdays to holidays because I think it's that important to read.
I hope Lair makes another book because I'm confident I can learn a lot from him.

Finally finding hope in my relationships

Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2022

I think this book has arrived at exactly the right time for me. I think all of us have experienced an intensity, a struggle, and even a hopelessness in our relationships as a result of the strange times we've been living in these past few years. Struggles in relationships that have particularly strong foundations.
Even if you're turning to The Practice of Love for entirely different reasons, there's so much it has to offer. When you commit to reading something like this, there's a sort of bracing that you do. "Ok, this is going to hurt a little and I'll probably be totally lost the majority of the time, but hopefully I'll gain something...?" Not here. Instead, I found a sense of relief. The Practice of Love is refreshingly accessible, extremely well-researched, and purposeful in what it teaches. I felt normalized in my relationships, but more importantly, there was finally something I could do to be better in them. It's helped me recalibrate what is important, and the practices within it have helped me show-up for others. It has facilitated a better understanding of compassion, for my loved ones and for myself.

More than just information, it's about transformation

'The Practice of Love' is so beautifully and thoughtfully written- presenting exquisite (and sometimes uncomfortable) examples of how the symptoms play out in our relationships when we're off course (thus, the uncomfortable...recognizing myself in these tender revelations), and how to apply these principles in meaningful ways. And learning to identify the parts of the self that are acting (overacting?) in our relationships is a game-changer.
I love the straight-forward, no-BS tone of Torrent's- you can tell he knows his stuff, and is speaking from the position of one who not only knows it, but is a student of this work too. In fact, he starts the preface of the book with this: "I do not offer this work from the faulty precipice of the grandiose healer or the artifice of the fully analyzed therapist. Instead I offer it as a fellow traveler, working and practicing, trying to do it a little better tomorrow than I did it today." Thank you Mr. Torrent. A pleasure to walk this path along side a fellow traveler (who knows a whole lot!).
Basically, I just love this book!
